Generic Marqibo

At this time, companies cannot make a generic version of Marqibo (liposomal vincristine). However, after the first patent expires in June 2014, it's possible that a generic version could become available, barring any lawsuits or other patents for specific uses of the drug. Although the active ingredient in Marqibo is the same as that in Vincasar PFS, the two drugs are not the same.

Can I Buy Generic Marqibo?

Marqibo® (liposomal vincristine sulfate) is a prescription medication approved to treat certain adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). It belongs to a group of medicines known as vinca alkaloids.
Marqibo comes as a kit containing different vials. The contents of these vials must be combined to prepare the final medication. The individual components of the kit are made by different manufacturers, including Hospira Australia Pty, Ltd., Cangene Corporation, and Jubilant HollisterStier, and packaged by Anderson Packaging, Inc. Marqibo is distributed by Talon Therapeutics, Inc.
The medication is protected by patents and exclusivity rights that prevent any generic Marqibo from being manufactured in the United States.

When Will Generic Marqibo Be Available?

The first patent for Marqibo is set to expire in June 2014. This is the earliest predictable date that a generic version could become available.
However, other circumstances could come up to delay or shorten this exclusivity period. This could include such things as lawsuits or other patents for new Marqibo uses. Once Marqibo goes off-patent, there may be several companies that manufacture a generic Marqibo medication.

Is Liposomal Vincristine a Generic Marqibo?

No -- liposomal vincristine is the active ingredient in Marqibo, not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name."
The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine. In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer would make the product.
