Leukemia Home > Gleevec Dosage
Available in the form of a tablet, Gleevec is generally taken once or twice a day, with food and a glass of water. Your healthcare provider will take several factors into consideration when determining a suitable dose of Gleevec for your particular situation. Some of these factors include the type of cancer being treated and whether you are taking other medications.
An Introduction to Dosing With GleevecThe dosage of Gleevec® (imatinib mesylate) your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on a number of factors, including:
- The reason you are taking the medication
- Your age
- Your height and weight (in children)
- How you respond to Gleevec
- Other medical conditions you may have
- Other medications you may be taking.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
Gleevec Dosage for LeukemiaThe standard dose of Gleevec for adults in the chronic phase of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is 400 mg a day. The standard dosage for adults in the accelerated phase, or blast crisis, is 600 mg a day. Your healthcare provider may increase this amount to 600 mg (in the chronic phase) or 800 mg (in the accelerated phase or blast crisis) if you are not adequately responding to treatment and are not experiencing serious Gleevec side effects. The standard dosage of Gleevec for adults with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is 600 mg a day.
The standard Gleevec dosage for children with CML or AML is based on the child's body surface area, which is calculated using the child's height and weight. Children should not receive more than 600 mg a day.
