Gleevec® (imatinib mesylate) is licensed to treat certain types of cancer, such as leukemia and GIST. It belongs to a group of chemotherapy medications called tyrosine kinase inhibitors, which means it blocks an enzyme that cancer cells need to grow. Other uses for Gleevec include the treatment of:
 
  • Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and myeloproliferative disease (MPD)
  • Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) or chronic eosinophilic leukemia
  • Aggressive systemic mastocytosis (ASM)
  • Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP).
