CYP 3A4 Inducer Medications
The liver breaks down busulfan using enzymes known as CYP 3A4 enzymes, and some medications known as CYP 3A4 inducers can increase the activity of these enzymes. Thus, combining busulfan with one of these drugs may decrease the level of busulfan in your bloodstream, possibly making it less effective. Your healthcare provider may need to monitor you more closely if you take busulfan with a CYP 3A4 inducer.

Echinacea could potentially decrease the effectiveness of busulfan. Do not take echinacea during busulfan treatment without your healthcare provider's approval.
Combining busulfan with ifosfamide may increase your risk for a potentially serious bladder condition known as hemorrhagic cystitis. Hemorrhagic cystitis is associated with bladder irritation and blood in the urine.
Itraconazole may increase blood levels of busulfan, which could increase your risk for busulfan side effects. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor you more closely if you take these medicines together.
People who are receiving chemotherapy are generally advised to avoid getting a live vaccine. This is because live vaccines contain live viruses or bacteria. Because busulfan can decrease the body's immune response, you could become infected with the virus or bacteria used to make the vaccine. Also, live vaccines may be less effective in people using busulfan. Talk to your healthcare provider before getting a vaccination during busulfan treatment.
