Gleevec Medication Information
People who have dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, leukemia, or a certain kind of gastrointestinal tumor may be prescribed Gleevec® (imatinib mesylate). This chemotherapy medicine comes in the form of a tablet and is available in two different strengths. It should be taken once or twice daily with food and a large glass of water.
As with most forms of chemotherapy, side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, and fatigue are possible with this drug. Discuss this and other information with your healthcare provider before taking this medication. Some drugs can react negatively with Gleevec, and your dosages may need to be adjusted. Also, some side effects should be reported to your healthcare provider right away, such as shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, and vision problems.
