Fludara Overdose

Some of the problems that may occur as a result of an overdose with Fludara (fludarabine) include blindness, coma, and even death. However, an overdose on this medicine is unlikely to occur, as it is administered by a healthcare provider in a healthcare setting. If too much of the drug is inadvertently given, treatment would likely involve supportive care to treat any resulting symptoms.

Can You Receive Too Much Fludara?

Fludara® (fludarabine phosphate) is a prescription injectable medication approved to treat chronic lymphocytic leukemia. As with most medicines, it is possible to receive too much Fludara.

The specific effects of an overdose may vary, depending on a number of factors, such as the Fludara dosage and whether it was combined with any other medications or substances.

Effects of an Overdose

Fludara is an injectable medicine -- it is given as an injection into a vein (an IV injection). The medicine is normally given by a healthcare provider in a healthcare setting. Therefore, an intentional Fludara overdose is unlikely to occur. However, there could be certain situations in which too much Fludara is inadvertently given, such as if the dose is miscalculated.

Based on the known effects of using high doses of Fludara, possible symptoms of an overdose may include but are not limited to:

  • Low white blood cell counts, which would increase the risk for infections
  • Low platelet counts, which would increase the risk for bleeding
  • Blindness
  • Coma
  • Death.

Treatment Options for a Fludara Overdose

There is no known antidote for a Fludara overdose. In the case of an overdose, the medication will be stopped.

Treatment will mostly involve supportive care, which consists of treating the symptoms that occur as a result of an overdose. Supportive treatment for a Fludara overdose may include:

  • Close monitoring of blood cell counts
  • Antibiotics to treat infections, if necessary
  • IV fluids.

Seek immediate medical attention if you believe you or someone else may have overdosed on Fludara.
