Clinical Effects

Elitek has been studied in several clinical trials, where it has been shown to decrease uric acid levels in adults and children with leukemia, lymphoma, or solid tumor cancers. In these studies, Elitek reduced uric acid levels to normal, or below normal, and maintained low uric acid levels for 2 to 7 days in 92 percent to 100 percent of people. A significant decrease in uric acid levels could be seen as soon as four hours after the first dose.
Elitek has also been compared to allopurinol (Zyloprim®). In one study, 87 percent of adults with leukemia, lymphoma, or solid tumor cancers responded to Elitek treatment, which meant their uric acid levels were maintained below a normal level between day 3 and day 7 after starting treatment. In comparison, 66 percent of people responded to allopurinol.

When and How to Use It

Some general considerations to keep in mind during treatment with Elitek include the following:
  • This medication comes in the form of a powder that is dissolved in liquid and given as a slow injection into a vein (an intravenous, or IV, infusion). It is usually given once a day for up to five days.
  • The Elitek dose is given over a 30-minute period.
  • You will normally receive this medicine in a healthcare setting, such as a hospital, where you can be closely monitored.
  • Your healthcare provider will give you IV fluids in addition to Elitek to make sure you stay well hydrated.
  • For the medication to work properly, it must be used as prescribed.

Dosing Information

The dose of Elitek your healthcare provider recommends will vary, depending on your weight. The number of doses you receive may also vary, depending on your clinical situation, such as your uric acid levels.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dose unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.
