Generic Arzerra

There are currently certain laws and regulations that prevent a generic Arzerra (ofatumumab) from being manufactured in the United States. This is because Arzerra is considered a "biologic" medication. Although these laws are beginning to change to allow for generic biologic products, Arzerra may still be protected by patents for quite some time.

Can I Buy Generic Arzerra?

Arzerra® (ofatumumab) is a prescription medication used to treat chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), a type of cancer of the blood cells.
Arzerra is made by Glaxo Group Limited for GlaxoSmithKline. At this time, it is not available in generic form.

When Will a Generic Version Be Available?

Arzerra belongs to a class of drugs known as monoclonal antibodies. Like other monoclonal antibodies, it is considered a "biologic" product. Biologic products are medications made from living cells or organisms. The living cells or organisms are used to make a complex mixture of proteins or molecules, which are then used to make medications or vaccines.
Previous regulations did not allow generic versions of biologics to be manufactured. Therefore, it was not possible to buy generic biologics. However, the regulations are currently changing, and generic biologics are expected to be available in the near future.
Even with changing regulations, however, it is not entirely clear when a generic Arzerra may become available. The medication was first approved in 2009, and will likely be protected from generic competition by patents for several years.

Is Ofatumumab a Generic Arzerra?

No -- ofatumumab is the active ingredient in Arzerra, not a generic version of it. What can be confusing is that the active ingredient of a drug is often referred to as the "generic name." The generic name is different from a generic version of a medicine.
In order for there to be a generic version of a medicine, the original medicine must have gone off-patent, and another company besides the original manufacturer must make the product.
